The Best Trick to Be #1 on Google’s Map and SERPS
Did you know the recent Google Algorithm Update is now hiding duplicate listing dropping your organic search listing to page 2 if you are already listed in the Google Maps listing for a search term?
Imagine Google Search is a big party.
When you look for a pizza shop, Google shows you two main places where businesses can stand.
The Map List (The Local Pack)
This is like a small table right near the door, showing 1 to 3 best local businesses on a little map.
The Regular List (Organic Results)
This is the long list of blue links below the map.
The Big Problem – The Diversity Update
For a long time, the best businesses would stand at both the Map List and the top of the Regular List.
This was called Double Dipping.
Google said, “Wait a minute! That’s not fair. We want to show people lots of different businesses.”
So, Google made a new rule called the Diversity Update.
If your business is already winning and standing at the Map List, Google now pushes your link down the Regular List, sometimes far away, like Page 2.
They don’t want the same business link in both places at the same time.
It’s like Google telling the biggest kid, “You already got a big slice of cake from the Map List, so let someone else have a turn on the Regular List.
So we got pushed to page 2 in SERPs that we were nicely taking both space on maps and lists. So now we are salty about that. Now you know why this article is here.
We are looking for loopholes or any ethical way to occupy more visibility share.
The Main Solution we see – The Decoupling Trick
The smartest way to get back onto the top of the Regular List is to use a clever trick called Structural Decoupling.
Before: Businesses used their main website page (their Homepage) for both the Map List and the Regular List.
Now: They change the link on their Map List profile to a special, secret page (a Location Page) instead of their Homepage.
When they do this, Google sees two different pages.
Google’s rule now only pushes the special page down, but the main Homepage is free to jump back up to the top of the Regular List!
How to Make a Special Page a Winner
The special page must be very good and very honest. It needs:
Local Pictures: Clear, real photos of the business doing work in the actual neighborhood, so Google’s picture-watching AI knows it’s real.
Correct Info: The name, address, and phone number must be exactly the same everywhere.
Good Reviews: Getting at least 10 honest reviews helps a lot. Google wants to see a steady flow of happy customers.
I have seen digital marketing agencies getting 50 reviews within a week some even higher and 6 months later they are dropping significantly. What i do is i immediately takes a screenshot and save it for later to analyze.
Buying review is not sustainable, just a waste of money. Doing great work that clients would appreciate you and grant a positive feedback is priceless. Strive to gain that over shady practice if you are agency owner reading this.
Other Tricks (Be Careful!)
Some people use Grey Hat (a little sneaky) tricks, but they are risky,
Fake Businesses (DBAs)
Registering a few different names for the same shop (like “Sunil’s Pipes” and “Sunil’s Emergency Plumbing”) to try and take up more spots on the Map List. You need unique legal papers and phone numbers for each one, or Google will shut them all down.
Parasite SEO
Writing an article about their business on a popular, trusted website like LinkedIn or Reddit. The article ranks high on the Regular List, and the business gets a second win without using their own website.
I have seen business posting questions on reddit sri lanka forum about digital marketing agencies in sri lanka and later commenting that their business is a great fit. Go check it, the thread is still active. Here is the link to it.
The Clever Plan – How to Win Twice
The trick to getting your main website back to the very top of the Regular List (the blue links) while still staying the star on the Map List is simple.
It’s like having two tickets to two different rides at the fair,
The “Two Tickets” Trick (Structural Decoupling)
We have already talked about this above so just scroll up. Make sure that your content pages don’t cannibalize itself when you do this.
Stop using your Main Page link on your Map List Profile. Instead, you create a special page just for the Map List.
Why? Google’s rule only pushes down the link that is on the Map List.
By using the special page link there, you trick the rule.
The special page gets pushed down (which is fine, no one was looking for it anyway), and your Main Page is now free to rocket back to the top of the Regular List!
I really hope Google won’t drop the hammer on our head for showing this to you. But who are we a small spec in Googles eco sphere and this is fair play. Right? Lol!
The Three Rules for Your Special Page
Your special page can’t just be empty.
Google wants it to be the best, most helpful page for local people.
It needs to follow three rules to keep its spot on the Map List and make Google happy (this is what the new updates are all about).
Be a Local Expert (Show, Don’t Just Tell Rule)
Google loves to show content from people who really know their neighborhood.
Instead of just saying, “We serve your city,” your page needs to name the small neighborhoods and streets, like “We fix pipes for folks in Beverly Hills and Hollywood.”
The more specific you are, the more Google sees you as a true local expert for that little area, not just a big company passing through.
Be Honest and Easy to Read (No Shouty Ads Rule)
Google is working hard to remove “clickbait” (those sensational, shouting articles that trick you into clicking).
Keep your special page clear, honest, and easy to use. No big, flashing signs or confusing words. This proves you are a quality, trustworthy source, which Google’s systems are rewarding more than ever.
Be Fast and Accurate (Trust Signal Rule)
Your page must load super fast (faster than 2 seconds) on a phone, so people don’t get frustrated and click away. Speed makes Google trust you more.
You must have your Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) exactly correct everywhere. If you get even one letter wrong, Google thinks you are not a real business.
Make sure you have at least 10 recent, real reviews and are getting new ones often. This is the “Trust Threshold” that shows Google you’re busy and doing good work.
If this helped you be kind enough to hare the article with your audience.
Good luck!
